What is Flaxstic™?
Flaxstic™ is a combination of flax straw ‘waste’ and biopolymers. The flax fiber and flax shive provides the biopolymers with a unique, eco-friendly appearance while maintaining the biodegradability, compostability and strength of the biopolymer.
Flaxstic™ is an environmentally and socially sustainable. Biopolymers are made from annually renewable non-food source crops, while the flax fiber and flax shive is obtained from annually renewable flax straw ‘waste’. Saskatchewan grows the most oilseed flax in the world and the flax straw is often seen as waste and burned because it is too difficult to breakdown in the field. Using flax straw in biocomposites also provides local farmers with an additional source of revenue for what otherwise would be considered waste.
Almost every piece of plastic that has ever been made still exists today, and that’s a problem. Open Mind Developments (OMD) creates biodegradable and compostable consumer products with Flaxstic™ to help solve this problem.
OMD provides an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional non-renewable crude oil based plastic products with the Pela™ product line made from Flaxstic™. Flaxstic™ is a proprietary biocomposite material consisting of plant based biopolymers and flax straw components. It doesn’t look like conventional plastic because it isn’t conventional plastic, and that’s the point.
What can Flaxstic™ do?
Open Mind Developments (OMD) created Flaxstic™, then in 2011 launched the Pela Case, an eco-friendly Apple iPhone case. The Pela Case is made from Flaxstic™ and demonstrates one of many potential applications for Flaxstic™.
The Pela Case is OMD’s first consumer product created under the Pela™ brand. The Pela Case is an environmentally friendly smartphone case made with Flaxstic™. The Pela Case is made from plants instead of crude oil, so it’s compostable, biodegradable, renewable, BPA free and non-toxic.
